In 1966, when Bradco first opened its doors in Avenel, New Jersey, the roofing distribution business was different from what it is today. Manufacturers sold most materials direct, and distributors serviced "fill-in" deliveries and customer pick ups. Since many manufacturers were more involved and concerned with the manufacturing end of the business, it was typical for them to use common carriers for shipment. This almost guaranteed delivery problems. It was Bradco who, after hearing their customers complain about the service from the manufacturers, decided to do something about it. The idea was simple. Bradco would purchase their own fleet of tractors and trailers to pick up the materials from the manufacturer and deliver it to the job site. This assured a Bradco customer a delivery that was on time and right. When customers saw the benefits of the service we were providing, our sales began to grow rapidly. As our reputation for service spread, we began to make deliveries further from our warehouse in Avenel, New Jersey. To better serve our customers, Bradco opened branches in Lakewood, New Jersey and Hartford, Connecticut in 1972. By the end of our first 10 years, we had four branches operating in three states. In 1986, we had 17 locations in eight states. And, by our 40th anniversary, Bradco had a total of over 150 branches doing business in 29 states.
